As visual art, new media technology continue to develope as does new ways to create lessons that both students and teachers
will enjoy. The following lessons are suggestions are based on successful lessons completed by teachers in the education
community.
Lesson Title: Art and Poetry
Grade: 8
Subject: Visual art and Language
This lessons was apart of an entire grade 8 unit on poetry and fine art. Using postcard images from
the Art Book (available at most book stores), each student was to select an image of their choice. Based on that images student
were instructed to create a vocabulary based on their perception of that chosen images. Using that vocabulary students as
a final project had to create an 8 - 12 line poems in what ever style they wanted (if they chose Haiku they had to create
two poems). Prior knowledge and skill were important in making this lesson successful. Students in prior lessons explored
reading poetry, writing and sharing personal poems and critiquing poems written by others. I used a power point presentation
with examples of student poems about fine art found on the internet to introduce this project, which helped with student understanding
the goals of the project.
